Hen-devering To Have A Fun Time

A busy few weeks have ended with my best friend's hen do in Bournemouth. Although there were some times when I hadn't been looking forward to it we really did have a good time. We didn't even go into the centre of town, but everything we saw and everywhere we went was really good.

Our hotel, The Mayfair, was fine. Not good, but fine. There is pretty much no way to have a good nights sleep there as everything makes noise... from doors to extractor fans... in this heat it was nearly unbearable to sleep. The bar was a bit rubbish but then it is only a small non-chain hotel. Some of the rooms we're very spacious, out of five my friend and I really did get the short end of the stick. You might want to make a map if you're in any room over number 18, as the place is a maze. It looks like they added another building on to the back but for some reason built them at different heights and just added steps everywhere! The location was really good though, ten minutes from the beach [by the zigzag ramp], 15 minutes to the pier end of the beach and 5 minutes from the stretch with bars and restaurants.

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a long weekend away. There's a fantastic beach. Anyone with a dislike of hills might want to make sure they walk down to where the cable car/lift is. £1.25 for a minutes ride up the cliff... trust me, I only walked down the zigzag walk and that was way too much! The beach is also quieter down that end so there's more room to move about. Down that end there's a kiosk with ice creams and cold drinks and toilets. I would remind you all though that they're open to everyone... and a significant amount of "everyone" is disgusting. With that and the cubicles being smaller than your average broom closet I'd give them a miss if you're able to.

The first night we had dinner in Kayla Brasserie, very reasonable price and excellent portions. You should definitely have the garlic bread pizza with caramalised onions and mozzarella, it was amazing. Night two we went to Zorba's Greek Restaurant, now I'm not a fan of Greek food, but they had a fantastic meze menu. £20 each and they bring you starters and main courses... lots of good things to choose from and they we're quite happy to accommodate vegetarians and gluten diets.

Bar-wise we hit a few random ones. Friday night was very quiet and to be honest I wouldn't recommend any of the ones we went in. First we hit Orange Rooms which was down from the restaurant and they gave us free drink vouchers. The only redeeming feature of this place is it had a slushy machine which is mainly Bacardi. The DJ was truly awful, he didn't know how to mix and none of the songs really fit together... all from different genres. Next was Le Chic, this place at least had better music but was deadly quiet. The toilets in this place were fantastic... there was a little seating area with mirrors perfect for doing your make up.

Saturday night we hit Revolutions after the meal, and I have to say I was very impressed. It was massive and so much better than any of the other ones I've been in. We'd pre-booked entry to Cameo so we headed off down there. Now... we were dressed in 80s fancy dress so obviously we had to go to the Disco room. Not really disco but a mix of cheesy from 60s right through. We got a free drink with the tickets... I would advise you not to have wine in there... it was not good. As a whole though it was a really good club, even the music in the main room was a good mix. We left at about 3.30, feet aching from all the dancing and throat sore screaming song lyrics and laughing.

Everyone we met, locals and non, were really friendly and such a good laugh. We had dressed our hen up in a Madonna Like A Virgin bride outfit and while out we met... a 50s hen party, a stag in a Baywatch babe swimsuit with fake boobs, a stag in a blue suit with clown fish all over it, an Indian brave stag do, a dinky stag dressed in a Disney princess dress, a Charlie's angels... not like the TV show but actually dressed as angels all in white [we were assuming the hen was called Charlotte] and finally a man wearing a red bustier and frilly knickers to match, there was also a suspender belt but no stockings. I'm sure there were more but I can't bring them all to mind.

So to sum up... go to Bournemouth for relaxation or fun!
