Movies Of 2017 - October Recapped

Already getting this month off to a good star by pre-booking my Thor ticket, and the Unlimited screening of The Death Of Stalin. Although I have since seen the 3D trailer of Thor and, well, ladies... I feel like it needs to be seen in 3D... no reason. Honestly. Purely for cinematic values... not for perving reason... we'll see. I've got the 2D ticket, but I've worked out I can come out and then go to the 3D screening too. Ha. Anyway, I need to stop drooling at that. --- Blade Runner 2049 It's 2049 and bioengineered humans are a mainstream part of society, essential to keep the human race going. Newer models have been created to obey humans, and K works for the LAPD as a blade runner. K's investigation leads him to a farm where he retires an old model replicant. While searching he finds a box buried beneath a tree that contains the bones of a human body, a woman who died in child birth. When the lab investigates the remains they discover that they are in f...

The Keys To A Good Episode

Watching Doctor Who: Series 1 Serial 5: The Keys of Marinus My Synopsis: The gang arrive on Tracy Island, where the landscape is made of glass. Susan get separated from the group when she managed to melt one of her shoes in the sea of acid and has to pop back to the nearest Clarks for a replacement pair. Eventually they all meet back up at the giant pyramid and find Arbitan, keeper of the keys... but he's so good at his job that he needs someone to go and get the other four back for him after he hid them in a global game of hide and seek. With the TARDIS taken hostage they must retrieve the four keys, and any waifs and strays they find along the way, so that Arbitan can mind control everyone into being good again. The Sea of Death We're greeted with an island of lush... what I'm going to assume is green... foliage surrounding an oddly patterned pyramid. The sea doesn't look like it carries death, as the title suggests, but then I have a sneaking s...

Marco... Polo!

Watching Doctor Who: Series 1 Serial 4: Marco Polo Here we are, Marco Polo, the first entirely lost episode of Doctor Who. It's a shame in more ways than one, having looked at the pictures of the episode I really would have like to have seen all the costumes in action. In this escapade the gang lands in 1289 with a completely buggered ship. Luckily they manage to hitchhike a ride with Marco Polo as they travel the Silk Road to visit his chum Kublai Libre. One of the group is hell bent on assassinating Chaka Khan in Peking, and attempts to sabotage the caravan along the route are thwarted. As if that wasn't bad enough, the gang has to retrieve the TARDIS from Minty Polo, who repurposes it when he realises that he's forgotten a gift for KHAAAAAAAN! The Roof of the World I've got a lot more admiration for the theme now I know how it was made. So the last episode saw the giant foot print outside the TARDIS. "The sun has melted the edges and made it look ...

The Edge of My Seat

Watching Doctor Who: Series 1 Serial 3: The Edge of Destruction I'm feeling a little ripped off at this point that The Edge of Destruction is only two episodes long, but I'm reliably informed it's this way because it was filling in the schedule. So I'm intrigued to see how this one works. The Doctor clearly hasn't RTFM, and when he tries to repair the faulty navigation circuit he manages to cause an explosion that knocks the gang out for a bit. For some reason this causes some temporary and very random memory loss, with a side effect of minor homicidal rage. Fearing the worst, that Ian and Barbara have some how learnt how to work the TARDIS in their brief stay, and are deliberately sabotaging it to get back to 1963, the Doctor throws around some wildd accusations and then drugs everyone. After some time, and some serious next level detective work from Barbara (honourary member of the Scooby Gang), they work out that the TARDIS is actually trying to warn th...

The Daleks In Black And White

Watching Doctor Who: Series 1 Serial 2: The Daleks I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little excited to see the first Daleks. This is basically like seeing Who royalty. Slightly concerned about 7 episodes thought, the last story was a little trying to watch with less... but let's see how it goes. The TARDIS has landed in a petrified jungle on a strange planet. Keen to explore, the Doctor fools everyone into leaving the safety for a quick jaunt to the shops for some mercury. In the futuristic city though there are very few shops, and the locals have made use of what supplies they have left. As it turns out, plungers make great weapons. The tin cans on wheels, clearly descended from bakers and plumbers, are desperate to leave their city. And after taking the gang hostage, encourage them to help forge an alliance with the more meaty inhabitants of the planet. The Dead Planet Ah yes, so we were left with Susan impatiently reading the radiation dial and telling th...

An Unearthly Nerd

Watching Doctor Who: Series 1 Serial 1: An Unearthly Child The first disc is in the machine, and I'm already comforted by the familiar BBC tune. Let's see how it goes shall we? Susan, an annoying and obstinate child, has begun to make her teachers concerned. Instead of inviting her grandfather in to talk about it they decide to go to her home. When they get there they find Susan lives in a junkyard. Finding this unacceptable, they enter the premises without even knocking and proceed to badger an elderly gentleman about why she's shut inside a Police Box. But phew, it's okay, he's a time travelling alien and she's actually inside his ship... and luckily, he is her grandfather, despite his pimp-like attire. In a vain attempt to possibly make both teacher disappear and to keep his ship a secret, he randomly slaps the controls and they end up on earth in the stone age. Can they outwit primitive man and make it back to civilisation? As it turns out... only...
